Hotels in Venice,Italy

Venice famed for its miles of canals, gondola’s and classical appearance. This city is water borne and connected to mainland Italy by a 3km bridge.

Surprisingly, Venice is a small city and easy to manage on foot and of course on the romantic gondala’s. Stroll through the little Piazzas, alleyways and back streets climb over some of the 400 bridges and discover your own Venice with shops, bars, family run trattorias and real Venetian characters.

Use waterbuses and water taxis to get about the six districts and 122 islands formed by about 150 canals set in a shallow coastal lagoon. This is a city where the musei ebraico, the Guggenheim art gallery and the teatro la Fenice rub shoulders with hotels, residences, beaches and a world famous casino. From Venice you can easily travel by train or bus to nearby Padova and Treviso.

Things to do in Venice

  1. Sightseeing: Good lord, where to start…Piazza San Marco, the doge’s Palace, the Fenice Opera house, a trip down the Grand Canal on any boat to view the palaces, the Rialto bridge, the Ponte dei Sospiri, the Arsenale where Venice’s ships were built, the Guggenheim Museum, the palladian Chiesa della Salute and Ca’ Rezzonico for the best museum in Venice. The list is endless as any guide book will tell you.
  2. Island hopping: Burano for exquisite lace, Murano for hand blown glass, San Giorgio and Torcello for their incredible churches. The Giudecca for Magnificent Molino Stucky and the Lido for beaches, the casino, the film festival in early September and some of the most expensive real estate in Venice.
  3. Shop ‘til you drop: Bottega Veneta for handbags, Dittura for hand made Gondolier velvet slippers (really chic), of course there are many glass shops but be careful that it says authentic Murano glass as cheap substitutes are now coming in from the Balkans. But when in Venice buy a mask. The cheapest are made from papier-mâché and unpainted, the most expensive are set with jewels and made from tooled leather.
  4. Do the Carnivale: At the end of February for the 10 days prior to shrove Tuesday the most singular carnival in the world takes place in Venice. The whole city wears masks, dresses up in fancy dress and there are more parties glamourous balls and events than you could imagine. An experience not to be missed at any cost. Accept no substitute.
  5. A Gondola Ride: before the advent of the motorboat almost all transport in Venice was by barge or Gondola. The Gondola being the taxi of its day. Now a romantic, but pricey, way to travel about the city. Head for the Gondolier stop near the hotel Bonvecchiati but don’t bother haggling, the prices are set by the Council of Gondoliers annually.
