The capital city of Rome is located in the Italian region of Lazio and on the western coast of the country. It has been a tourist’s haven for centuries and today is a popular city break choice, especially with the wealth of low cost flights flying into Rome’s two airports; Fiumicino and Ciampino.

Within this magical city there is so much to see and do, be prepared with comfortable shoes. In the centre is the Coliseum; one of the many signs of Rome’s ancient civilizations. The Trevi Fountain is the place to make a wish, legend has it that if you turn your back, throw a coin to the God’s and make a wish it will come true! The Vatican City is a state within Rome and if you plan carefully you could even see the Pope great Romans.

The River Tiber separates east from west and just north of the river is Trastevere, a neighbourhood isolated for centuries by a lack of bridges, so it has developed its own distinct flavour. Other must see’s include the Appian way, Piazza della Repubblica, the Spanish steps and the shops of the Via Veneto.

Things to do in Rome

  1. A visit to the Vatican City is a must see. The city has its own police, army and the architecture is awe inspiring for even the most non- religious.
  2. The traditional neighbourhood of Trastevere is busy and lively and is a great chance to get away from the tourist town on Rome. Here you will get lost in the number of bookshops and individual art galleries.
  3. Many a Hollywood hit has been filmed in Rome including La Dolce Vita, Arrivederci Roma and Roman Holiday. It can be fun to see this city as a giant film set and wander in the footsteps of Cary Grant, George Clooney, Sophia Lorena and Elvis Presley.
  4. Piazza’s are the Roman version of squares. Explore them starting with Piazza di Trevi made famous by its fountain, legend has it that whoever throws a coin into the waters will return to Rome. Then wander to Piazza Navona, Piazza di Spagna, Piazza della Repubblica, Piazza San Pietro & Piazza Venezia. You’ll enjoy discovering them all.
  5. What this city is famous for; its Roman ruins! Walking up from the Roman Forum from Via dei Fori Imperiali, you reach the Palatine Hill. The ruins here are left from Domus Flavia and Domus Augustana, and were built around the first century. From atop the hill, you have an incredible view of the city below and you can look out across the Circus Maximus and the Alban Hills.
