Pisa, the famous home of the leaning tower and located in the region of Tuscany. There are many leaning towers throughout Italy; Turin, Ravenna, Bologna, San Gimignano but Pisa has to be the most famous and along with the jewels of the rest of this city, Pisa is a great option for a city break or longer stay in Tuscany.
This was one of the four maritime republics and in the middle ages one of the most important cities in the world. Nowadays, few know about its botanic gardens, its festivals, its fabulous daily markets or the fact that is has one of the largest universities in Italy. Pisa also houses many unique museums and art galleries showcasing art and treasures from around the world.
The historical city centre is a great place to start in and the perfect place for morning or afternoon tea. Then stroll the river Arno, discover hidden shops and restaurants. Plus, the coast is not to far away, the beaches of Marina di Pisa or Tirrenia are only a short bus ride away.

Things to do in Pisa
- Sightseeing: The Piazza dei Miracoli holds the leaning tower of Pisa, the duomo, the baptistery and the war cemetary. Situated on the north side of the river where the heart of the city is, this is where most people start and finish their tour of Tuscany.
- Market day: Weekends are when Pisa holds its markets and the streets fill with stall holders selling everything from sweets to livestock. The first Sunday of every month is when the largest is held and this also has antiques, pets, clothing and over 500 stalls in total.
- Horse buggy ride: It might seem a little old fashioned, but riding about town in a horse drawn cart is a lot of fun.
- Seaside strolling: take a bus trip to Tirrenia for some of the cleanest beaches in Italy. Or head north to Viareggio and Forte dei Marmi by train.
- Fine dining: You’ll find tourist restaurants on the Via del Duomo and Borgo Stretto, but away from the main streets you will find a range of restaurants and trattorias of all sizes and lower prices.
