The Portuguese island of Madeira is located off the coast of Africa, some 850m from the mainland of Portugal. With mild winters and summers, and a climate controlled by the Gulf Stream the island is the perfect choice for holidays all year round. Known by the Romans as the Purple Islands, the area retains some of its indigenous rainforests.
Within the island the main tourist resort and the island’s capital is Funchal, offering a modern city with a wide range of tourist services and facilities. The city itself is within a natural amphitheatre, starting at the picturesque harbour and surrounding the city. With a comprehensive road system, Santa Cruz, Madeira airport and Ribeira Brava are all easily accessible.
Attractions on the islands include its many white fronted churches, traditional Portuguese style buildings and its vineyards.

Things to do in Madeira
- Take the ferry to the smaller Madeira island of Porto Santo, for a spot of golf or for pure relaxation.
- On the north coast of the island in São Vicente is the Volcanism Centre, highlighting where the islands formation began.
- Along the coast of Madeira are many hidden beaches and are definitely worth a visit, especially with the sea’s mild temperatures.
