Hotels in Lazio,Italy

The Lazio region, vastly underrated and often overlooked in the rush for the eternal city of Rome and the miles of seemingly unending beaches of Lido di Ostia and San Felice offers a unique look at Italian life.

This is a rugged largely rural region of village capped hills, medieval hamlets, rolling hillsides, hidden valleys and pristine lakes.

A land where the simple natural beauty of the countryside has been prized by centuries of popes, dictators and kings alike. All of whom have left their mark with villas, ornate gardens and immense national parks.

Rome is obviously the main reason people fly into the region of Lazio, but those willing to explore can get to Viterbo, Civita castellana, Rieti and the lakes of Bracciano and Bolsena without very much difficulty. Historically speaking it is the cradle of civilisation and has the ruins to prove it!

We have picked out a selection of our favourite hotels in Lazio for you to have a look through, including a cowboy ranch!

Things to do in Lazio

  1. Visit Rome: From the elegant “village” of Trastevere to the beautiful Piazzas of movie fame, from the Spanish steps to the fashionable shops of the Via Veneto. There is so much to see and do in this fabulous city where do I start? The gardens of the Villa Borghese are splendid and a stroll across to the island in the middle of the River Tiber is good fun. But the best reason to go to Rome is for shopping!
  2. Ruins: The entire region and not just Rome, is awash with Roman, Etruscan and medieval ruins. From Cerveteri to Tivoli and Tarquinia to Sperlonga we can almost always guarantee that no matter where you stay there will be something worth seeing nearby.
  3. Eat & drink: Rome is better known for high costs when it comes to dining out but we have found that you can eat extremely well on a budget, the market in Campo dei Fiori is an extremely good place to start. You may well have heard of Frascati for its white wines, but if you go to Palatium on the Via Frattina near the Spanish steps and you’ll find all the wines of the region
  4. Bomarzo: This is a great place for families looking for a simple day out. The Parco dei Mostri (monster park) is relaxing, shady and offers a myriad of stone statues for kids to explore.
  5. Outlet shopping: Romans, ever on the lookout for a bargain, have embraced outlet shopping faster than any other region. There are many offering discounts of up to 50% of famous name fashion brands such as Cerruti, Versace and Prada. But my favourite is Leoni Limentani in the Jewish quarter for stylish interior design and home wares at great prices and where you need to take a number to then be escorted through an Aladdin’s cave of treasures!
