Hotels in Florence,Italy
Home to one of the oldest universities in the World and to many an art gallery and museum, Florence is one along with Pisa one of the best known cities in Tuscany.
The famous cathedral, the Uffizi gallery, Michelangelo’s “David”, the river Arno and any number of other sights created at the height of its power during the Renaissance make up the main attractions.
Stroll about the Pizzas, browse the gold shops of the Ponte Vecchio, buy anything made from leather, especially shoes; Florence is the unsung fashion capital of Tuscany. Dining out is a joy as there are so many reasonably priced restaurants and family run trattorias. But any ice cream (gelato) made in the traditional way (artigianato) to sample real Florantine life.

Things to do in Florence
- Sightseeing/shopping: The uffizi gallery, the Duomo, the Baptistery, the Ponte Vecchio, the catacombs, Santa Croce, Santo Spirito, Santa Maria Novella, la Signoria must be included in any itinerary but do take time out to do a little shopping. Florence makes some of the best gloves, handbags, shoes and jewellery in the world.
- Cose` Fiorentine: the Florentines only add their name to things they really love so the Fiorentina steak is not to be missed. Usually sold by the etto (or pound) this is a truly massive t-bone steak and best served to a minimum of two people. Thick, juicy flavoursome and cut from the increasingly rare white Chianina cattle that roam the flat lands of the Arno valley. Pricey but an experience not to be missed.
- Catch a festival: Florentines love to party, some piazzas buzz all year round but the Rificolona festival of lights on 7th September is particularly spectacular. Calcio in Costume held in June is a series of football type games in medieval costume. But best of all is the Easter Sunday fireworks parade; a pair of white chianina cows pull a cart of fireworks to the main square where it is torched by a mechanical dove - bonkers but great fun. (dates for all festivals will change annually)
- Do the Boboli: the Italian style Boboli garden is a must to visit With a 16th century grotto decorated with scenes from Greek and Roman mythology, including copies of Michelangelo's famous "Slave" series. This enormous garden stretches as far as the Porta Romana, and has the oft copied Vasca d'Isola pond at the centre with its fountain and statue of Neptune. Take time out in one of the pavilions and enjoy the view. Admission is about €2.
- Watch the sun set: Piazza Michelangelo is the largest piazza in Florence and set on a hill just south of the city overlooking the whole marvellous panorama. Built as part of the restructuring of the city walls in the 19th Century it is popular with locals and tourists and the best place from which to enjoy a Tuscan sunset. Many people propose up here and it is easy to see why.

Villa de Bosconi - Classic country style (4 stars)
We love Villa de Bosconi because...
It is a charming 4 star villa hotel in Fiesole. Being in Florence has its benefits, but it can be hot and having a cool garden with a pool to escape to that overlooks the city can be a godsend. With rooms this lovely though you may find it hard to go back to the city. From £31.00 pppn -
Santa Maria Novella Hotel - Popular central stylish location (4 stars)
We love Santa Maria Novella Hotel because...
Florence may have hundreds of hotels but few are as well situated as this. Completely renovated in 2007 it is strolling distance from the duomo and is close to the station, historic city centre and the magnificent church from which it takes its name. From £90.25 pppn
