Things to do in Corfu - All

  1. Rent a scooter or a car and explore the island!.. Ther is so much to see on this island you just never know what you will find in the next bay! Due to its location Corfu has always been the target of the world's most known conquerors: Roman and Byzantine empires, Turks, Venetians, France and Great Britain. Each leaving a trace of their culture here, so it's not surprising that Corfu is often called 'Mediterranean little Europe'. From ancient temples, Byzantine churches, Venetian fortresses (there are still four of them) to the magnificent, residential buildings you might expect to see in Venice or Paris.
  2. For culture vultures the tiny village of Gastouri, 5 miles south of Corfu town is definately worth a visit just to see the beautiful palace of Austrian Empress Sissi with its lush gardens dating from the 19th century.
  3. Corfu Town, even if you don't opt to stay here as it does have only one small beach, Corfu town, the historical capital is well worth a visit. Described by Countess Flamburiari as: 'Venice and Naples, a touch of France and more than a dash of England, apart of course from being Greek', Corfu town is steeped in history. Shopoholics will also love the many posh boutiques, local stores and stalls selling local items like gold jewelry, wild honey, fig cakes and handmade lace. The café at the Liston, built by the French in the same style as those in Rue de Rivoli, Paris, is probably the best place to 'people watch' while enjoying a local Ginger beer (a local specialiy and another must to try while in Corfu) but be aware it is a little pricey, so you might want to move on for lunch!
  4. Enjoy a traditional Greek evening.. sing and dance the night away! Greek nights are a great night out. Usually there is an 'all-in' price - all the food and wine is included. There will be lots of dancing - especially with fire. We recommend choosing a small local taverna, offering a small friendly more authentic crowd, after a few glasses of local wine you're sure to be singing along with the locals!
